DR, SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW

I am a social historian, and in my view, economic, social and political phenomena can usually be traced back to the population and its living conditions. I lead the unit: I am getting more funding and planning joint and separate projects with other members.

DR, RESEARCH FELLOW

My special area is the population and family history of Finland under Swedish rule, with the focus mainly on the landless population. My research topics have been unmarried women and illegitimate children as part of families and family networks from the 17th to the 19th centuries. My interest in this area is also the villages of Häme, as well as the formation of large farms and their impact on the demographic structure of peasant villages. In the HoPES research unit I use my microhistorical skills in gathering individual life stories and building a population database. My blog Kaurakarpion mitalla also deals with the households of Häme and their members.

My research topics are traffic and communication, information management, administration, agencies and power. In the HoPES research unit I study the impact of traffic routes, environment, seasonal variation, infrastructure and communication on living conditions and settlement.
