Research group: Kirsi Günther, Anna Kulmala, Suvi Raitakari, Sirpa Saario

Research period and funding of the study: 2010-2012, Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation), Innovations in social and healthcare service system programme.

This research examined a new form of mental health rehabilitation. It involves several  3-month rehabilitation courses for 18-30 aged adults who are diagnosed with schizophrenia. The courses focus on how the clients are rehabilitated in the community and will systematically evaluate their social situation and capabilities. The aim is to develop a co-operation approach which carefully facilitates the cooperation of various stakeholders, to promote  the clients’ rehabilitation. Another aim is to reduce the need for institutional psychiatric care. The study focuses on the cooperative model developed within the courses. The following research question was posed:

How is client-centeredness understood in the cooperative model , how is it realised and how can  clients benefit from the co-operation which cuts across the current boundaries between various sectors?

The model was studied from the point of view of the clients diagnosed with schizophrenia. The study had four aims: First, to evaluate clients’ position and status. How is the client seen and listened to as an expert of his/her own condition? The second aim was to demonstrate what new forms of rehabilitation and collaboration are needed in order to facilitate the clients developing an expert role in their own rehabilitation process. The third aim was to provide suggestions on how to develop client-centered rehabilitation in a changing environment. Fourth, the study aimed to model the process of client-centered collaboration practice produced in the courses.
