Master Class Week Offers a Glimmer of Hope

Our first Master Class week has attracted the attention of Mari Maasilta, University Lecturer in Media Education at the University of Lapland and past Editor-in-Chief of the Finnish communication sciences journal Media & viestintä (Media & Communication).

Along with 45 students and a number of others interested in media and the Arctic, Mari attended the Master Class week at the end of November. She came to the course looking for glimpses of hope in an era when “hope is in short supply in Finnish science and maybe in Finnish society in general,” as she put it in her farewell editorial foreword on the journal’s homepage.

After a slightly pessimistic start, Mari was impressed by the messages of hope by the speakers, and decided to devote a considerable part of her foreword to cover the themes. In particular, she was encouraged by the increased activity and improved position of indigenous people in the media. See Mari’s text in full here (in Finnish).

All of us at TaRC thank Mari for her interest in the course and aim to continue spreading hope with our events in 2019!
