What is PEVNET?

PEVNET (“Persistent virus infection as a cause of pathogenic inflammation in type 1 diabetes – an innovative research program of biobanks and expertise”) is an collaborative project funded by the European Union’s (EU) 7th framework programme coordinated by the University of Tampere, Finland, with the main focus in the detection of persistent enterovirus infection leading to inflammation and tissue damage in the pancreas and its role in mediating the inflammatory response that causes type 1 diabetes.

PEVNET consists of 13 project partners from 6 countries with leading expertice, with UTA as the coordinating partner. The project started in January 2011 and the duration is 5 years.

Objectives

A causal association between enterovirus and type 1 diabetes has become more and more likely. The aim of PEVNET is to create a new strategy and network of unique resources that make possible to achieve a breakthrough in the development of new treatment for type 1 diabetes. The main focus is in the detection of persistent enterovirus infection leading to inflammation and tissue damage in the pancreas.
